Priscilla

Acts 18:1-4 “After this Paul left Athens and went to Corinth. There he found a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had ordered all Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to see them, and, because he was of the same trade, he stayed with them, and they worked together—by trade they were tentmakers.

Priscilla, sometimes referred to as Prisca, was another amazing woman seen in the New Testament. “Prisca” is a Latin name meaning “venerable''. She may have held a higher social status than her husband Aquila, because her name appears before his four times. She is mentioned 6 times throughout the New Testament, and for a woman to appear this much must have meant she was important. Priscilla and her husband Aquila were some of Paul’s closest disciples and followers. They were both missionaries and followed Paul and helped hum spread the word of Christ in many cities such as Rome, Corinth and Epesus. Prcislla and Aquila were not only teachers of the faith, but they also worked as tentmakers. This may not seem like a big deal, but a woman rarely worked outside the duties of a caretaker. Priscillas work outside of the home was never really in question, which is surprising due to the household codes that most people in society followed.

Romans 16:1-3 “Greet Prisca and Aquila, who work with me in Christ Jesus, and who risked their necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks, but also all the

churches of the Gentiles. Greet also the church in their house.”

Priscilla and Aquila moved to multiple sites helping Paul with his mission. Prscilla and Aquila are often referred to as the “power couple” of the New testament because they show such an amazing example of what a faith filled marriage looks like. They truly are bonded through the work of Jesus Christ and both husband and wife are treated as equals by each other and peers. They offer Paul a home, companionship, and friendship during his journeys. Paul sees Priscilla as an equal to Aquila and entrusts her with tasks such as building a home church in Corinth. This church in Corinth was one of many that the couple founded through their life. The church in Corinth is probably the most significant of them all because of the chaos that was going on in Corinth when it was founded. Priscilla shows us women of today that we have just as much impact on the mission of Christ as men do. If she accomplished so much in a time when women's work was not respected and valued, imagine what we can do today when we don’t face those barriers that she did. She shows us what a healthy and productive marriage looks like, all while being a strong and faithful woman as an individual.
